Extra £1,000 won't stop drink driving, says online car insurance firmThe thought of adding almost £1,000 onto a young driver car insurance premium is "not enough of a deterrent" against drink driving, according to the online car insurance comparison site uSwitch.com. The site's head of insurance made the comment in response to news from Scotland Yard that motorists under 25 are responsible for a quarter of all drink driving convictions. He went on: "Young drivers would benefit a great deal if the penalty for being 'slightly' over the limit was much tougher. This would send a much clearer message to young drivers and avoid any confusion as to how much they can safely drink and still be in control of their car." As things stand, the extra charges levied against offenders can see them handing over as much as £995.45 (in the first year) on top of their regular premium, which for many young drivers represents "an unmanageable financial burden' according to uSwitch. However, if you've already been caught out whilst under the influence, the online car insurance site recommends shopping around for a more affordable motor insurance quote.
