Online car insurance customers stumped by overseas coverMost online car insurance customers have little or no understanding of the way their policies work overseas, according to internet switching service uSwitch.com. It revealed a staggering two thirds of motorists don't know that most cheap car insurance providers only offer third party cover for policyholders who drive abroad. Even worse, one in ten thinks that buying travel insurance covers them to drive in a foreign country - even though it has nothing to do with driving. A few car insurance firms, such as eCar and Saga, do provide the same level of insurance whether you're at home or abroad - but with most others you'll need to pay an upgrade fee to preserve your 'TPFT' or 'fully comprehensive' status. According to a spokesman for the online car insurance switcher: "Motorists should either check which providers cover them fully for driving abroad before buying insurance or, at the very least, check the small print before they go away."
