To help drivers looking for the best places to fill up, Hoot has decided to review the UK's two free petrol and other fuel comparison websites - petrolprices.com and whatgas.com.
It is now possible to see which filling stations are selling the cheapest fuel in any area simply by using the internet.
Both websites are similar, allowing motorists to enter the names of towns, cities or postcodes. Once these are submitted, the sites provide access to price details of service stations run by companies such as Tesco, BP, Shell, Texaco and others.
However, petrolprices.com requires users to register personal details including name and full address. While this initially slows down access to fuel price information, the service can email petrol, diesel and other fuel information at regular intervals such as daily, weekly and monthly.
Once location or postcode details are entered into both applications, a map showing nearby filling stations is displayed. Both sites use clear, colourful logo-type markers to depict the various company service stations.
Google-powered maps are used on both sites and there is little to choose between the two on speed of use. When Hoot carried out this review, the fuel price data appeared to be out of date on the whatgas.com site while the petrolprices.com website looked to be 100% accurate.
Petrolprices.com's email alert feature allows drivers to set up a personal fuel price monitoring list, adding and removing areas as required. For drivers travelling between various towns and cities, it is possible to find great prices and avoid, say, motorway prices.
