Peugeot - The history

Hoot Car Insurance Services love the Peugeot range as we believe the French car manufacturer has something to offer everyone; the 106 to suit young drivers, the 307 ideal for small families and the 607 designed especially for the executive. These cars are reliable and versatile.

We thought it would be a great idea to have a look at the company history and see how Peugeot got to be the second largest automobile manufacturer in Europe. We then finish off by telling you how you can get a great deal on your Peugeot car insurance premium with Hoot.

Peugeot began life as a family business in a grain mill which was soon transformed into a steel foundry in an area as abundant with its water supply as it was with its skilled and industrious workers. After brothers Jean-Pierre and Jean-Frederic launched the way to produce hardware from saw blades to coffee grinders, umbrella frames and sewing machines, Armand Peugeot turned his hand to bicycles. In 1882 we saw the introduction of "Le Grand Bi", the first penny farthing style bike which made way for a whole host of other bicycles.

Then, 1889 saw the first glimpse of Peugeot as vehicle manufacturers with the presentation of the steam-powered tricycle at the 1989 World Exhibition in Paris. Quadricycles powered by gasoline and then petrol made their début in the 1890s and so too did the automobile that would go on to be the success of the Peugeot family.

Motorcycles were introduced to the range in 1903, which foregrounded the brand's association with the motorsports world. Read more about Peugeot and motorsports.

The First World War revealed another string in Peugeot's bow as they turned to the production of arms and military vehicles. But post-war there was a decline in available staff and Peugeot went to the US to draw on methods of streamlining production, which introduced the means of mass production. This came in very useful as the car was beginning to emerge as a necessity for every day people.

In 1929 came the Peugeot 201, as well as the first car with independent front wheels it was the first model to feature the brand's exclusive three-digit name. Peugeot names most of its models in the form x0y or x00y, such as the 306 or 4007, with x depicting the size and class of the car and y the model number, so the higher the number, the newer the model.

There was a practical reason for placing a 0 between two other numbers, originally the model number appeared on a plate at the front of the car and the hole for the starting handle coincided with the starting handle. Today, the button to open the boot is placed in the 0 of the 307 cc and the 607.

In 1969, the motoring world saw Peugeot win their first accolade of European Car of the Year after the 504 was showcased at the 1968 Paris Auto Show. The brand went on to achieve this title with the 405 in 1988 and again with the 307 in 2002.

The PSA (Peugeot Societe Anonyme) Peugeot-Citroen holding company was formed in 1976 as the two French car manufacturers merged. Although the two were now combined the group stressed that the Peugeot and Citroen would continue to keep their separate identities which would be reflected in their models. The group then went on to purchase Chrysler Corporation from the US as they were striving to keep their heads above water. But a sudden loss of investment left the PSA also in financial difficulties.

However, in 1983 the French company saw a turn around when the 205 appeared on the scene. This model was a tremendous success and after 5.3 million were produced, the Peugeot brand was saved.

From 1998 the identity of Peugeot was reinforced as paws were added to the lion badge, reinforcing power and balance and blue piercing eyes were added to symbolise long-term vision. In 2002, the logo underwent another update as extra depth was added in the form of the lion's shadow.

Peugeot's latest advances include the new Peugeot 307 SW, a compact car that's smooth sophisticated, comfortable and roomy as well as sporty. A diesel-electric Peugeot 307 hybrid that can achieve 80 mpg is also on the drawing board. While it is just in concept stages at present, this will be one of the most fuel efficient cars in the world should it make it to production.

Today, PSA Peugeot Citroen is, behind Vauxhall, the second largest car manufacturer and its headquarters in Paris is seeing revenue upwards of €56.3 billion.
