Road safety information by crash experts

Young drivers are dying on British roads at a higher rate than any other motoring group - and, with this increased risk, car insurance for young drivers is higher than for other ages.

More than 3,000 under-25s are involved annually in fatal or serious injury accidents, prompting the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) to attempt to reduce these alarming statistics.

RoSPA has produced guidance and information that can help new motorists to consider the potential road dangers and to think about adjusting their driving style accordingly.

Crashes are far more frequent once learner drivers pass their tests. Research highlights a number of facts about young people in car accidents, showing that:

  • Twenty per cent crash during their first year driving
  • They are three times more likely to be in a crash than older motorists
  • They are more likely to lose control with no other cars involved
  • They are more likely to have accidents while overtaking or at night time
  • They are inexperienced in driving on bends

Main reasons for new driver crashes include:

  • Inexperience - accident rates fall after more time on the road
  • Over-confidence - leading to young drivers being too close to cars in front, too fast, or overtaking dangerously
  • Poorer hazard knowledge - young drivers can take an extra two seconds to react to dangers
  • Friends - carrying passengers of the same age can lead to a car crash
  • Being male - the statistics show that young men crash more often than new women motorists

To cut the very real risk of terrible injuries or even death in accidents, RoSPA recommend that teenage drivers and under-25s should improve their road skills with the extra training provided in the Pass Plus scheme.

RoSPA also suggests drawing up a contract with parents - called the Safe Driving Agreement - that allows young people to drive family cars, but only if they agree to various conditions such as neither speeding nor drinking alcohol, and agreeing to limits on numbers of friends carried in their vehicle.
