What to do with T-cut

Picture the scene, you've bought your second-hand car, you've found the best deal on Hoot for your young driver car insurance and you're standing outside your flat with your dad, admiring your pride and joy.

He says, "It needs a good T-cut!"

"T-what?" you say to yourself.

Unless you spent hours with your dad as a child, watching him lovingly rub magic goo into his Ford Sierra, you probably won't know about T-cut. However, here at Hoot we can offer you all the T-cutting advice you'll ever need, so that your dad will be so impressed he'll fall over backwards and offer to buy next year's car insurance for you!

What is it and what does it do?
T-cut is a proprietary brand of car polish liquid containing a mild abrasive. It is used in car care to do several things; from restoring paint colour on an older car, to removing small scratches from new paintwork.

Basically, T-cut is applied with a soft cloth and gently rubbed into the area to be treated. It gradually smoothes down the paint's surface, removing road grime, tar spots, stains and small scuffs.

It will make your paintwork appear brighter with a more vivid colour. It will be smoother and will therefore stay cleaner a little longer. It will also make the car easier to clean.

Buying and using tips
There are other generic abrasive polishes on the market and some car enthusiasts even say they prefer to use Brasso, metal cleaner, to do the same job as T-cut. The various polishes can be bought in coloured versions to match your car and you can also buy T-cut for metallic paint.

When you use it for the first time, be careful, don't go mad. Remember, you are effectively removing paint, so don't overdo it and it's probably wisest to apply it to small areas at a time. The process involves rubbing it on, then buffing it off. If an area of T-cut dries too much, it will be more difficult to remove.

And when you've finished...
Once you've done all that rubbing-on and buffing-off, you may well be pretty knackered, and as you stand back with your mug of tea to exclaim about how wonderful the car looks, you've got one more thing to think about.

Do you want to do it all over again in six months time? No! Well, now would be a good time to rub on some wax polish to protect your beautiful shiny paintwork from the ravages of motoring and the Great British climate.

Wax polish will protect your car from bird poo and salt damage, and guess what? It'll make it even more shiny.

Now, you can say to your dad, "Go on dad, you can comb your hair in front of that paintwork, or you could if you had any hair!"
