Hoot top tips

Buying your first car
So if you’ve recently passed your test (big congrats, by the way) no doubt you’ll be counting your pennies to see how much you’ve got towards that longed for event – buying your first car. But take on board some wise words from your old friend Hoot, who really wouldn’t want to see you come a cropper. Follow these guidelines when buying a car:

  • Don’t buy anything without getting a full mechanical health-check first. If you don’t have a mate in the know that can do it, then spend a little money with an organisation like RAC or AA who can do it for you. It’s worth it – honest!
  • Check to make sure it’s not nicked, written off or still subject to a hire purchase agreement. See www.hpicheck.com
  • Sounds obvious but check it over thoroughly. Make sure you see it in broad daylight when bodywork problems like rust or dents will be more evident
  • Point out any fault you see to the seller – they’ll probably be willing to lop a bit off the price if you demonstrate that you’re going to have to spend money on the car
  • Haggle. Always. And don’t be embarrassed, the seller will be expecting it. This is your hard-earned cash you’re forking over, don’t forget. And you’ll never see him or her again (you hope) so try to get that price down a bit
  • Compare prices on other, similar cars in the marketplace
  • Always go for a test drive. If you’re alone (especially if you’re a she) take a friend along
  • Check paperwork thoroughly – look at the MOT documents to make sure that the seller does actually own the car
