Hoot top tips
Keep your premiums down
We know that you don’t want to spend more on your young driver car insurance than you have to – who does? So (even though it’s really not in our best interests and our children may starve consequently!) we’ve put together a few handy hints on how you can keep those premiums down.
- This may sound a little, well, arrogant – but it really does make sense to use a company like us that shops around on your behalf to find the best possible quote. Sure, you could probably do it yourself – but can you really be bothered?
- Whatever the make and model of the car that you drive, it will be in a group that determines how much you pay for your insurance (funnily enough, known as an “insurance group”). Group 1 is the cheapest, and 20 the most expensive. So check out which group your car falls into.
- Making sure that your car is not parked on the road overnight may keep your premium down. If you’ve access to a garage then use it.
- Concentrate on building up a no-claims record. If you’re a good little driver then you could be saving yourself up to 65% in a few years.
- Don’t overload your policy with other drivers.
- Set a voluntary excess – this is an amount that you agree to pay in the event of any claim. For example, if your excess is set at £150, this is how much you’ll pay towards the cost of repairs etc. Note this is on top of the compulsory excess.
- Try to avoid driving to the corner shop for milk and a newspaper. The lower your mileage, the larger the potential savings you could make on your car insurance.
- If you’re lucky enough to have a classic car, take out specialist insurance for it. As you will often find it cheaper.
