How The Road Traffic (New Drivers) Act affects you
It’s a sad fact that a huge proportion of accidents on our roads involve young and newly qualified drivers. In an effort to do something about this the government launched a special initiative in 1995 (which took effect in 1997) called The Road Traffic (New Drivers) Act. If you’re newly qualified, then it’s worth checking how it could affect you – we’ve summarized it below.
- If you reach 6 or more penalty points within 2 years of passing your test, your licence will be revoked.
- Under the terms of the act, there is no right of appeal – but you can appeal against the conviction that earned you the penalty points if appropriate
- If your licence is revoked, you revert back to being a learner again – you’ll have to buy another provisional licence and pass the test (practical and theory) again
How to avoid the above
Eek, don’t want to have to go through all that again, do you? Safe driving is important on all fronts, so as a new driver with years of motoring ahead of you, start getting into good habits right now. Remember, good habits are every bit as hard to break as bad ones. Taking a Pass Plus test is also a good idea. More about the Pass Plus test.
