Toyota's impression on motor sportsGiven we spend our time with cars on the mind, it's probably no surprise to hear that the team here at Hoot Car Insurance Services follows the motor sports scene keenly. There will always be arguments over which team we should be following, but the presence of Toyota cars in that scene for more than thirty years makes them one of the stronger possibilities. Below we explore the development of Toyota's racing cars. Toyota: a history in motor sports
Toyota's first rally driver was a Swede, Ove Anderssen, who drove well in the RAC of Rally Great Britain. Although he set up the company that would become Toyota Team Europe in his home country, it proved necessary to move, first to Belgium, then to its current home in Cologne.
The first big win for Toyota came in 1975, when the Finnish driver Hannu Mikkola won the Thousand Lakes Rally in a Toyota Celica. Over the following years, Toyota teams won the Driver Championship and Constructor Championship several times, but eventually came to believe that they had achieved all they could within the World Rally Championship, and began to focus on alternative motor sports. One of these is the NASCAR scene in America, where stock car racing is second only to American football in popularity. After some success, particularly a win in the truck section from Todd Bodine in 2006, Toyota has entered the Nextel Cup and Busch Series, where we wish them luck. Within Europe, Toyota Team Europe's attention has been turned from rallying to Formula 1 since 2002. They are currently struggling to threaten the more established teams, as is shown by neither Jarno Trulli nor Ralf Schumacher reaching the finish line in 2007's UK visit to Silverstone, but they remain determined. TTE's Noritoshi Arai has promised the imminent arrival of "the strong, fast car that I know all of you are expecting from Panasonic Toyota Racing" in his review of the 2007 season. In the company's home country of Japan, Toyota's presence in the Super GT has been more successful, most notably with Toyota cars winning in both sections in 2005. Toyota car insurance
