Toyota goes to the moviesThe 2007 BFI Film Festival was sponsored by Toyota, which initially caused some scratching of heads here at Hoot Car Insurance Services as we tried to work out the connection between the movies and Toyota. But the more we thought about it, the more examples we could think of.
Take Bond, for example. The James Bond car that first hits your imagination may well be one of those Aston Martins, if it's not the underwater Lotus from The Spy Who Loved Me. But think a little longer, and you might well remember Bond's sporty white convertible from You Only Live Twice, a Toyota GT2000 with a video phone screen behind the gearstick. Rumours abound that the car was almost a prototype, and that the only reason it was turned into a convertible was that Sean Connery didn't fit while the roof was attached. While that's the most glamorous example we came up with of the Toyota marque on screen, it's not the only one. In the Butterfly Effect, the young Evan's mother is shown fixing a Toyota Celica at the opening of the film. Like many other examples on film, this very popular Toyota model is used to suggest that the owner is an average, everyday type of person.
In Veronica Mars, however, the shadowy, message-leaving Jack's choice of car – a plain blue Toyota – is chosen as it is so popular in America that he could fade into the background of any busy street. Steven Spielberg, being very fond of Toyota's luxury brand Lexus, approached them to design the look of the futuristic cars in Minority Report. Some of the defining images of this film are the levitating cars pouring up the sides of buildings as well as along the more usual horizontal roads, and the powerful red car that is literally built around Tom Cruise, both triumphs of Toyota design, though sadly not available to buy yet.
The Lexus models that are available in the UK, however, saw a marked rise in sales after their appearance in Footballers' Wives, and – oddly – I'm Alan Partridge; who would have thought Steve Coogan's character was aspirational? Cheap Toyota car insurance
