When cheap motor insurance quotes start to colour your view of the world...YouTube's great for all sorts of things, but when you open the possibility for anyone to post anything, sometimes they do just that. The other day, while working for a UK car insurance company, I was looking at car-related videos - all in the pursuit of delivering a cheap motor insurance quote, I promise - and found myself watching a brief bit of footage of someone driving a couple of hundred yards very safely in an old Peugeot. Now, I know that the UK's contemporary arts have had a close-focus thing for quite a while - you're more likely to find a small domestic scene than a grand mythological one, and I'm not averse to that. But even with that knowledge, this snippet of creative content is still an incident-free thirty seconds of suburban high street, and that seems a little dull. This isn't to echo the viewer who wrote the comment "what a pointless video"; naturally, the maker replied "what a pointless comment, you didn't have to watch it." Rather it's that I was wondering what the purpose of the video maker was, and whether it was to show to companies like ours just how safe a driver he was, in an attempt to reduce his premiums. There are others where the reasoning is clearer. One video is less about the drive than about the conversation that the driver has with his father, who has just arrived in the UK. Another shows an Italian driver who's just excited by the cars being on the other side of the road. One particularly touching video is the drive from a childhood home to a school that two siblings used to share, and it's got subtitles that try to persuade the sister home from America to rejoin the film-maker. This also features a safe driver, but the guy who's put up a video of his habitual drive from Worthing to Brighton being achieved in under two minutes would certainly be jeopardising a cheap motor insurance quote if it weren't done with editing trickery. Our Peugeot driver doesn't suggest any of these ideas; not out loud, anyway. Perhaps it's nostalgia, and he's trying to preserve a little bit of his home town before he moves away? I know I got a little attached to one video of someone driving into Blackpool, as I grew up nearby and it showed the same road I used to follow to the Illuminations. In that Blackpool trip, there's a wonderful moment where the guy with the camera points it at the satnav, and you realise you're watching an image of the car on the satnav screen, which is part of the image of the car on the video screen, which is part of the computer screen that you've got pointed at YouTube. It's like a visual version of those Russian stacking dolls, I think, and I like that a lot. Despite these other reasons, I still like to think that the Peugeot driver is trying out an innovative method of reducing premiums. I'm sure that he may have had other reasons to post his tiny journey up, but this one sticks in my head more than my aesthetic response; it's strange, and a little worrying sometimes, how your job shapes the way you see the world. I'd be less than sure about the underwriters paying too much attention to it. Sad but true. While the video shows the driver driving so as to avoid an accident for those few minutes, that might not be enough driving for the underwriters to take into account as they crunch the numbers into our cheap motor insurance quote machine. It's a good sign, though, to see that there are drivers on YouTube who not only know how to drive safely, but are also proud enough of that to show the world a video of it. And you'd never hear anyone from a car insurance company saying otherwise. That said, you might hear of people from car insurance companies who can maintain a healthier mental distance from their jobs than it seems I can.
