The Beetle is born
The Volkswagen story began way back during 1938 in Germany with the Volkswagen Type 1, the car that we lovingly refer to as the Beetle today. When the myriad of classic cars out there are considered, this has to be one of those models that defines a classic in essence - it's got history, it's retro, it's desirable and the original model is no longer in production.

Starting off as a car for the people in Germany, and now a national legend in its own right, some might say that the Beetle is the one thing that Hitler got right. Its production came about after the German dictator demanded Ferdinand Porsche create a car for the working man and from then, with a little bit of tweaking from Erwin Komenda, the classic car as we now know it took shape.

The Beetle became a sort of prisoner of war in 1945 after the heavily bombed VW factory was captured by the Americans and handed over the Brits. After considering that the factory should be used for maintaining military vehicles, British Army Officer Ivan Hirst persuaded the British Army to order 20,000 vehicles to use as light transport. Because some of the UK service personnel were permitted to take their Beetles home, one of the original models is still in existence in Surrey today, a real classic VW.

VW Legend
It's hard to conceive that the Beetle was ever known as anything else but it wasn't until 1967, almost 20 years after since the first Type 1 came off the production line, that VW started referring to it as the Beetle. The model has acquired many pet names throughout the world since including kupla in Finland (meaning bubble), Garbus in Poland (meaning hunchback), Cucarachita in Guatemala (meaning little cockroach) and Mwendo wa Kobe in Swahili (meaning tortoise speed).

Like most classic cars, the Beetle isn't what you would call conventionally attractive. It doesn't have the style and clean lines of say a Porsche Boxster but it has ultimate strength of character. The Volkswagen Beetle is infamous for it's quirky looks, low-powered, noisy engine and bumpy ride.

The Beetle is on par with other classic cars like the Mini and the Citroen 2CV, is much-loved by Beetle enthusiasts and has something of a cult following. The Beetle's legendary status has stayed with it through the decades, from being a part of the 1960s hippie movement and appearing on the Beatles' Abbey Road album cover to being a star in the Disney movie Herbie and making appearances in 1980s childhood icon shows such as Ghost Busters and Transformers.

The new Beetle
Throughout the years Volkswagen introduced numerous editions of the Beetle from the GT Sports Beetle to the Super Beetle and City Beetle to the Jeans Beetle. The late 1990s saw this old favourite return like Lazarus from the flames when VW introduced "Concept 1" at the 1994 North American International Auto Show. The public went wild and the brand new, shiny VW "New Beetle" was born.

Built on a platform of the VW Golf with the engine and specifications of a totally modern car, although not identical (or half as cool in our opinion) the new model bears quite a striking resemblance to the original, particularly the bubble shape and snazzy choice of shades. Then by 2003 the very last original Beetle left the production line and was taken to be displayed at the VW museum in Wolfsberg, Germany where classic car enthusiasts can visit.
