Volkswagen and motorsports around the worldWhen it comes to motorsports the boys and girls at Hoot Car Insurance Services get very excited, we have the need for speed and where motorsports are concerned Volkswagen is, without a doubt, synonymous. VW's relationship with motor racing stretches back 30 years. After making their first appearance on the racing circuit back in 1966 when Formula Vee (circuit racing with cars built from readily available Beetle parts) became the trend, the motor racing VW affiliation has gone from strength to strength. The VW Racing cup
2000 saw the start of VW's one make racing cup which was named the Volkswagen Racing Cup the next year. This circuit racing championship is the perfect opportunity to see Volkswagens performing to their full potential.
The grid for this event acts like a timeline for VW, with models old and new competing against one another for the title. According to Autosport magazine, "Volkswagen's Racing's championship has blossomed into the best-looking and most competitive multi-model marque series on the current national calendar." Volkswagen and the Dakar rally
In 1980 the car manufacturer first competed in the Paris-Dakar Rally, finishing 1st, 2nd, 4th and 9th, then in 2006 VW competed in the powerful Race Touareg 2, placing second overall and 1st for the Diesel class.
During 2007 the VW factory team once again competed in the renowned Dakar Rally, which takes brave competitors on and off-road through varied African terrains. But after clinching 10 of 14 possible stage victories and leading the event for eight days, the team was robbed of its reward, achieving positions 4th, 7th, 9th and 11th. Kris Nissen director of Volkswagen Motorsport had a few words to say, "During the recent Dakar rally we showed that the race Touareg 2 has enormous potential. We will now push the development forward in logical steps. "We made significant progress before the Dakar in January. In the following eleven months fine tuning will be our main priority, which is not only related to engineering but also in the areas of logistics, preparation and team organisation." The VW Polo GTI Racer
Following the car manufacturer's success with motor racing, VW decided to build the first GTI especially for the motorsport world.
As the standard GTI already boasts such magnificent performance, minimal modifications were needed to get the new racing model up to scratch. The engine has been retuned so that the 1.8–litre turbocharged engine now puts out a whopping 210bhp and the gear box has been upgraded to an impressive six-speed unit. Even the old tyres have been replaced with Hankook slick racing tyres. Some nifty safety features, such as a sizeable safety roll cage and Recaro racing cage, have also been added so that the sporty VW model fully complies with racing regulations.
