VW - the history
Hoot Car Insurance Services has put together a bit of background information together for all you Volkswagen drivers out there, detailing how the Volkswagen Group began and how they have continued to make their mark on the European car industry, particularly among UK drivers. Volkswagen, which translated from German into English means "people's car", came about as a result of Hitler's demand for Ferdinand Porsche to create an automobile for the everyday working man in 1933. This bit of German dictatorship brought us a car with improved fuel efficiency, reliability, ease-of-use and economically efficient repairs and parts in the form that we now know as the VW Beetle. The Beetle now possesses something of a cult status, just like the Mini and Citroen 2CV, and has even had a starring role in the Disney blockbuster Herbie. The late 1990s brought the rise of Volkswagenism, a satirical religion formed by Beetle owners, which gained extensive media coverage and various owners clubs that are still going strong throughout the UK, many of which operate online such as www.newbeetle.org.uk.
From its humble beginnings in the 1930s, the VW brand has gone from strength to strength. Today, there are a number of Volkswagens on the European market from the funky new Beetle and classic Golf to the reliable Polo and family-oriented Passat. By 1955 the 1,000,000th VW came off the assembly line. Then 1998 saw the Golf convertible achieve the title of most produced convertible in the world with a total of 321, 848 units made. In 2002 the Golf became the most produced VW model ever at 21,517,415 units, more even than the legendary Beetle, and in March 2007 the 25 millionth Golf was produced. Despite the two German car manufactures always having been in cahoots, March 2007 saw Porsche take its holding of VW shares to 30.9%, triggering a takeover bid under German law. The prestigious car manufacturer announced that they did not intend to takeover Volkswagen, but instead made a move to ensure that the company could not be taken over by a competitor. As one of the largest car manufacturers in the UK today, VW are making a pretty penny with their net income for 2005 reaching a whopping €741 million.
