As a carmaker famed for its innovative designs, Volvo didn't disappoint at the recent British Insurance Car Security Awards. The Swedish manufacturer picked up a prize for its 'Personal Car Communicator', a security device which offers a host of unique features for motorists troubled by thieves.
The iPod-sized PCC is primarily used for the remote locking and unlocking of car doors, which in itself is not a unique feature. But besides that, it can also inform you of whether or not your doors are locked, from a distance of up to 100 metres away - a handy feature if you're always thinking you've forgotten once you get half-way across the car park.
The other neat trick up PPC's sleeve is its ability, via a sensor in the vehicle, to detect the heartbeat of someone inside. It means Volvo drivers can reassure themselves there's no thief or mugger hidden inside their car before getting in. Of course if somebody is hiding there, the PPC also allows you to turn the car's lights on (and possibly to re-lock the doors), which should show them who's in charge.
"Personal security is one of the cornerstones of the Volvo safety profile and we are delighted that the Personal Car Communicator has been recognised as an important technology to help further reduce vehicle crime," said Volvo's managing director.
"I never used to worry about finding muggers in my car, but now perhaps I do," said Mike Page, spokesman for Hoot Car Insurance Services.
