So you want to be a mobile librarian?

What does a mobile librarian do?
He or she will drive the library vehicle around its various stops, ensuring that no accidents occur. This means being in charge of a 7-ton vehicle, so you'd need an HGV licence.
You would also be in close contact with the library users once you got to each stop, and that could mean anything from checking the books in and out to helping people choose what they want to read about.
Am I right for this role?
As the above suggests, you'll need to enjoy driving all sorts of vehicles, and it won't hurt to have a clean driving licence with no accident history (just as it helps your car insurance quote). It's also likely that you'd be expected to know enough about the machine to let you perform basic maintenance routines.
You'll also need the ability to deal with customers of all ages, and probably the computer systems that the library part of the job demands.
What qualifications do I need?
There's the HGV licence, which will broaden the types of car you can drive widely; you may also be asked to have a librarianship qualification, or be asked to work towards one. Otherwise, you may well have to ask the council you hope to work for what specific requirements they may have.
Will I be rich?
You'll be working in a public sector company, so it's likely that you'll not be giving up on that Lottery dream immediately. However, it will give you useful and transferable skills that you could apply to either driving jobs or to a library career in the future.
