Motorists looking for a cheap rate on young driver car insurance need to be sensible in their choice of first car, according to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba). Teenage drivers should be especially wary of newer, faster or modified vehicles, which are an 'insurance nightmare'.
Biba's technical services manager has counselled the UK's less-experienced drivers to avoid such vehicles in favour of an older car from one of the cheaper car insurance groups.
He said: "On many occasions we see young drivers wanting to buy something sporty. If you buy something that's grouped at a higher level it's going to be expensive on insurance and cost a lot of money."
Holding-off buying a fast car until you have built up a few year's worth of no claims bonus is the best way to avoid getting stung on your car insurance premiums, added the spokesman.
"17 is very expensive, if you're 18 you'll get a discount, if you're 19 you'll get a further discount because at least you've got a year or two years' experience," he said.
New drivers should also avoid getting insured as named drivers on their parents' policies, according to Biba. Buying their own young driver car insurance might cost more in the short term, but the chance to build up no claims discount (not usually available as a named driver) makes it ultimately worthwhile.
