Top Gear blamed for young driver car insurance rates

Laddish attitudes portrayed on BBC programme Top Gear could be encouraging the under-25s to risk their lives, according to the Grampian Joint Fire and Rescue Board. It said the show encourages the kind of 'hard driving' that has lead to high accident rates on Scottish roads and caused young driver car insurance to be so expensive.

The newspaper Scotland on Sunday told how in a recent report, a spokesman for the GJFRB claimed that the Top Gear "fired the bravado and dulled the caution of young drivers", and "stoked an often fatal fascination for hard driving" - though he did not explicitly link road accidents with scenes of recklessness from the show.

Opposition to the report has been fierce, both from media commentators and the young drivers themselves. Top Gear, they say, is designed to be entertaining, not educational; and fans of the programme are aware of that.

"It's clear that something needs to be done to curb the rate of accidents involving under-25s, and to help them with the cost of motor insurance - but I don't think censoring TV programmes is it," said Mike Page, spokesman for the young driver car insurance specialists at Hoot Car Insurance Services.
