The Highways Agency has introduced a new road safety initiative for 14- to 16-year-olds which could lead to a reduction in the price of young driver car insurance.
In conjunction with road safety charity RoSPA, the Agency is releasing educational packs for teachers and youth group leaders under the banner "Throwing it all away".
The packs, which contain lesson plans, newspaper articles and a CD ROM, aim to raise awareness of the damage done by young people who drop objects from bridges onto main roads running beneath them.
A Highways Agency spokesman said: "This pack will help teachers and leaders of safety organisations to build awareness of young people of the consequences of their actions.
"This joined up work will make our roads safer and encourage young people to take responsibility for their actions."
"It's good to see children participating in road safety schemes before they get behind the wheel," said Mike Page, spokesman for the young driver car insurance specialists at Hoot.
"Raising awareness like this will lead to them having more respect for the road, and in time, cheaper car insurance premiums for all of us," he added.
