A case heard at Lewes Crown Court has meant that a 22-year-old is unlikely to see young driver car insurance at reasonable prices and has also resulted in a judge being in trouble with Luton authorities.
The young man, from Crawley in West Sussex, was arrested after taking his partner's car to travel to Luton, Hertfordshire, without her permission.
He admitted driving whilst disqualified, driving without motor insurance, drink driving and taking a car without authority, but while sentencing the judge made an unfortunate comment which has caused many to spring to Luton's defence.
The comment, which provoked chuckles in Lewes Crown Court, was that: "People are usually falling over themselves to drive away from Luton."
A Luton First spokesperson defended the town, saying: "Clearly, the judge in question hasn't visited Luton in recent times.
"The town is transforming thanks to a multi-million pound redevelopment programme and boasts an international airport, Europe's largest one-day carnival, a hugely successful film festival, an expanding university and a diverse population representing more than 160 countries - a line up that many towns would envy."
However, Luton's reputation is likely to be of little concern to the 22-year-old, who was given a jail sentence by the judge. Even once he is out of jail and allowed back on the roads, it is unlikely that he will see any cheap young driver car insurance for quite some time with his driving convictions.
