Drink driving ups young driver car insurance ratesSenior police officers from across the UK say they are alarmed by the numbers of young people who are caught drink driving every year. The under-25 age group is responsible for a disproportionate number of arrests in many parts of the country, a factor which contributes to the high cost of young driver car insurance. Scotland Yard has revealed that to 17 to 24-year-olds are responsible for a quarter of all drink driving convictions in London, and police forces in Leicestershire, Cumbria, Strathclyde, Northumbria and Dyfed-Powys have reported similarly worrying figures. Referring to the under-25s, a spokesman for Leicestershire constabulary said: "They're the majority of the casualties, they're the majority of the offenders. "And they're killing themselves, they're mutilating themselves, which is such a tragic waste of life." The forces agree that better education about the risks of drink driving, made available at an earlier age, is key to solving the problem. "An effective awareness-raising campaign is just what's needed to cut teenage drink driving and young driver car insurance rates," said Mike Page, spokesman for the online car insurance experts at Hoot Car Insurance Services.
