Young driver locked up for a fine he already paid

A conviction for speeding in the UK generally carries a fixed penalty: a £60 fine and three penalty points on your licence. Often it'll add a few pounds onto the cost of your next young driver car insurance quote.

But provided you pay the fine in due course, things needn't get more serious than that, right?

Well, not if you're 21-year-old Dayne Smith, from Radcliffe in Greater Manchester. Smith thought he was in the clear after paying his speeding fine but, owing to a police mix-up, he was subsequently arrested, handcuffed, imprisoned for six hours and sent back to court to plead his case.

"They [arrested] me and took me to Bury Magistrates' Court in a police car and put me in a cell," he said. "I was brought up to the dock in handcuffs surrounded by security officers and explained that I had already been in court and paid the fine."

Smith intends to sue for wrongful imprisonment.

"Many people complain about inflated car insurance quotes after a speeding ticket," observed Mike Page, spokesman for the young driver car insurance experts at Hoot Car Insurance Services.

"But next to Dayne Smith it looks like they got off pretty lightly."
