Tougher tests could mean cheap young driver car insurance
An out-of-date driving test means that many of today's young driver car insurance customers feel ill-equipped for the rigours of modern driving, according to Direct Line. A recent study by the motor insurance firm found that both instructors and their recently qualified pupils think the test should be made harder and more comprehensive in future.
Driving at night, motorways and icy roads were among the scenarios that drivers felt were overlooked in their lessons, and as many as 21 percent said they felt incapable of solo driving after passing the test. Worse still, around a quarter of respondents who had qualified within the past two years admitted that this lack of all-round experience had led to their being involved in an accident.
Driving instructors' responses echoed those of their pupils, according to Direct Line. 88 percent said the test syllabus needed to incorporate more rural driving practice, and a similar number called for more motorway, dual carriageway, night-time, and all-weather training for learners.
"There's no doubt in my mind that a tougher driving test would cut the number of accidents involving new motorists; and probably lead to cheaper young driver car insurance rates, too," said a spokesman for the motor insurance experts at Hoot Car Insurance Services.
