Magistrates in Great Yarmouth have passed sentence on a 28-year-old man with no young driver car insurance who crashed his car into a Norfolk home. Breath tests taken on his arrest proved he was almost twice over the legal alcohol limit at the time of the accident.
The court heard how the man, who had been out drinking in Gorleston, Norfolk, was giving a female friend a lift home when he clipped a kerb, sending the car spiralling out of control. It smashed into the side of the property before coming to rest in an adjacent street.
The driver fled the scene and ran home, despite challenges from local residents and oblivious to his stunned passenger, who remained in the front seat of the car until police arrived. He was arrested at home about two hours later.
To further complicate matters, the force of the impact had ruptured a gas main and parts of the street had to be evacuated until it could be made safe.
The driver was banned for three years and was given 50 hours community service. On top of that, the price of young driver car insurance for those with past motoring convictions might make it expensive for him to get back into the driving seat legitimately in the future.
In court, the man's representative said he deeply regretted the incident and was prepared to offer compensation for the damage he'd caused.
"This is a one-off incident that he regrets and he has not slept properly for the past four days," he said.
"Abandoning passengers after a crash is more common than you might think," said Mike Page, spokesman for the motor insurance experts at Hoot Car Insurance Services.
"The self-preservation instinct just takes over completely and other people get left behind."
