Young driver's car insurance costs offset by canny used car choices

A high number of accidents and young driver car insurance claims every year has earned the under 25s an unflattering reputation at the wheel - but when it comes to used car sales they are wiser than most.

According to credit agency Experian, people aged between 18 and 24 are more sensible when it comes to buying secondhand than many older drivers, basing their purchases on condition rather than age and asking friends for a second opinion before handing over any money.

Their well-informed choices meant that cars between three and nine years old sold better than younger used models in 2006.

"Given the large numbers who don't shop around for the best motor insurance deals, it's bizarre just how clued-up young drivers are when it comes to buying secondhand," said Mike Page, spokesman for the young driver car insurance specialists at Hoot Car Insurance Services.
