Insurance for new young drivers - Do you want to be a driving instructor?Do you absolutely love driving? Fancy yourself as a bit of an expert? Then why not consider forging a new career path for yourself as a driving instructor? Do you get really annoyed at all the bad drivers out there and often wish you could do something (non-violent) about it? Well, training up a new generation of good drivers is a pretty good start. And of course, you get paid to be bossy (only joking all you instructors out there - but then why are you reading this article?) So what does a driving instructor do?
Put simply, he or she teaches people to drive and makes sure that they are fully prepared for their tests.
Driving instructors usually work the going rate of 40 hours per week, though obviously much of this takes place outside normal working hours (that's evenings and weekends) when your students are free. It's a very important job with lots of responsibility, particularly when you consider the car accident rate among new drivers. This can make it stressful at times, but it's also very rewarding when one of your students passes their test (even though they stop paying you!) Am I the ideal candidate?
To be really successful in this field you'll need the following qualities:
- A calm and patient nature
- The ability to inspire confidence
- Quick reactions (think of those dual controls)
- An aptitude for assessing progress accurately
A good driving instructor needs an almost infinite supply of patience (mine did) and should be able to talk a student round from even the worst day or clumsy start. He or she also needs cat-like reflexes in case something goes wrong - the last thing your student wants to feel is unsafe. What qualifications do I need?
Formal qualifications are not normally required at the outset, but to work as a driving instructor you must be registered with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA). Expect to take a series of instructor examinations as your career develops.
You'll also need to be over 21, have held a full, clean driving licence for over four years and have a spotless criminal record. The majority of instructors start out with an established driving school (like BSM or the AA Driving School) and may branch out on their own in later years. Will it make me a millionaire?
If you establish an enormous, nationwide driving school - sure!
However, the starting salary for a driving instructor is between £15,000 and £20,000 (and that's still an awful lot of £20 lesson-fee cheques). Before they were famous.
There's a bit of a drought on ex-driving instructors turned celebrities, probably due to most instructors being busy, fulfilled people who maybe don't pine for fame.
The best we can manage is that Welsh cleaner-turned-media-darling Maureen Rees (not actually a driving instructor, or even that famous any more), star of the original docu-soap "Driving School". Further info
