Celebrating 50 years of the Mini - the young driver's insurance favourite
The Mini celebrated its 50th birthday in 2009 and all over the UK people celebrated. A London to Brighton Rally was organised by the London and Surrey Mini Owners club and Minis and their owners went from Crystal Palace all the way to Madeira drive right on the Brighton Sea Front to put on a Mini festival of delights for mini car fans. Now, most of those vehicles would have been carefully and lovingly restored and would be worth a lot of money, not to mention the insurance premium on such a desirable object, but you can still pick up a classic Mini, fairly cheaply and insure it, often for less than it would cost to merely insure a Subaru Impreza. The earliest Minis had door handles made of what looked like washing line and the windows on the sides opened by using a slider that often stuck resulting in several shunting attempts before the glass would shift. Yet, despite the early dodgy bits, the car soon became the motoring world's style icon that everyone wanted and a fabulous five million Minis were sold by 1986. The Mark III Mini was available up until 2000, when BMW took it upon themselves to upgrade and update the Mini and although the new models have been extremely successful and popular, they really aren't the same and many drivers miss that exhilarating feeling of closeness to the road that only the back seat of a 1960 classic Mini can give you.
